This course examines the evolution of documentary beginning with technological precursors through the emergence of various formats, production capabilities, and narrative traditions that demonstrate its relationship to American culture and global developments. Through viewings, lectures, readings, and discussions, students will learn about the major figures, genres, and issues related to early forms of documentary media. Approved for distance education.
