This seminar examines U.S. foreign relations and their ideological underpinnings from World War I to the early 21st century, with a primary focus on the Cold War and its global consequences. It takes a broad view of foreign relations, encompassing diplomacy, war, economic interactions, and political developments. The course emphasizes the cultural dimensions of U.S. engagement with the world, including mass culture, race-based and gendered ideologies, and the influence of American values and power on international relations. Students will evaluate how U.S. foreign policy both shaped and was shaped by the broader global context.
