An exploration of the historical, political, and economic development of the regions surrounding the Mediterranean Sea from its unification under the rule of Rome until its political division and fall of the Western Roman Empire. Focal topics include: the development of the Republic; the political and economic effects of building an empire that led to its decline; development and rule of emperors during the principate; governing the provinces; cultural trends; and the relationship between state and religion.
