This course examines the Civil War and Reconstruction: the political conflicts of the 1850s that led to secession, the conflict itself, and its aftermath. It also explores how the conflict itself and the Reconstruction period after the war are remembered in politics, history, and popular culture. Specific topics include: slavery and sectionalism, the emergence of Abraham Lincoln and the Republican party, secession, the military history of the war, emancipation, African Americans and the war, women’s role in the war, the rebuilding of the Union, and postwar racism. Approved for distance education.
