Catalog description

Examines the origins and development of the United States from Indigenous societies in precolonial North America through European colonization, revolution, and Reconstruction and its legacies. Emphasizes constitutional, political, and social change, the evolution of civic ideas such as liberty and governance, and the experiences of different communities. Students analyze primary and secondary sources, including foundational civic documents, and evaluate historical interpretations to understand how early Americans defined freedom, citizenship, and belonging. Cannot earn credit for both HIST 1200 and HIST 1250 . Approved for distance education.
