Authors in Cultural Context

Catalog description

This course invites students to examine multiple works by a single author (or small set of authors) and to analyze the relationship between that author’s work and texts produced by their contemporaries as well as other authors and literary movements later influenced by that author. Students both read these relationships as a network and situate that literary network within its historical and sociopolitical context. Students analyze scholarship on the literary work of that author and relevant forms of critical and literary theory, drawing on that scholarship and theory to develop their own scholarship that enters into the critical conversation about the author. May be repeated up to six (6) credit hours. Prerequisite(s): ENG 3001 or ENG 3020
