Catalog description

Introduction to fundamental principles governing structures, including statics and strength of materials. Course examines common structural materials and their mechanical properties to understand how to apply these materials in design. Emphasis on vector analysis, statics, development of free body diagrams, and the calculation of equilibrium and internal stress and strain. Sizing of structural members through calculation of shear, bending and deflection through formulaic and semi-graphical methods. Standard methods of comparing actual stresses to allowable stresses will be used to size structural members in consideration of tributary area and load paths, with an emphasis on steel systems and details. Two hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory. Extra Fee. Prerequisite(s): PHYS 2010
