Catalog description

3 cr. hrs.; 3 lecture hours; 0 lab hours per week. Prerequisite(s): BIOL 150 "C" or better, or concurrent enrollment in BIOL 150; and Program Director approval This course introduces students to medical coding for procedures and diagnoses using CPT-4 and ICD-10 coding systems. Students learn to translate diagnoses, procedures, services, and supplies into numeric and alphanumeric codes for accurate statistical reporting, billing, and reimbursement. Emphasis is placed on identifying primary diagnoses, applying V and E codes, using reference materials to ensure coding accuracy, and understanding evaluation and management (E/M) coding, including levels of service and the proper use of modifiers.
