The modern internet seems like a digital wonderland. For many, it is an unprecedented playground where participants can shift personas and identities more fluidly than ever. This course trains a critical sociological lens on the digital wonderland. It draws on sociological insights on how individuals make sense of their racial, class, gender, sexual, and cultural identities, while raising questions regarding the promise of social media. It problematizes how influential groups, such as governments, social movements, or corporations, strategically utilize these identities. It explores the effects such utilization might have on our social and political lives, with a particular emphasis on masculinity and radicalization in the digital age.
