MAKE BINGHAMTON YOUR HOME - - - The UNIV 101 & UNIV 104 courses offer a blended course format which includes two primary components, one focusing on the academic topic, taught by a faculty member with the second component devoted to new student transition topics, taught by a professional staff partner instructor. This freshmen seminar course will explore an intriguing intellectual topic, help freshmen hone critical thinking and writing skills, and assist students in making a successful transition to university life. - - - Most, if not all, of you have moved to a new city to attend college. We created this course as an opportunity for you both to reflect on what it means to move to a new place and to consider how you can become part of the community to which you have moved. When you arrived at Binghamton University, you became part of two new communities, the Binghamton University community, and also the wider Binghamton and Broome County community. The goal of this course is to introduce you to this second community, its history, its strengths, and challenges as seen through the organizations that are most involved with civic life here (notably, nonprofits, grass roots groups, activist entities, and others). The course also encourages you to think about what it means to be a member of a community, and what responsibilities, if any, they have to the community in which you live. As part of the course, you will meet community volunteers and learn about how and why they participate in civic life, and you will learn about some of the leading organizations in Binghamton that are working to make it an even better place and where many Binghamton University students already volunteer. NOTE: All UNIV 101 and UNIV 104 courses are restricted to students in their FIRST SEMESTER at the University. Students MAY NOT register for more than one UNIV 101 or UNIV 104 course.
