LOVE AND SACRIFICE IN OPERA - - - The UNIV 101 & UNIV 104 courses offer a blended course format which includes two primary components, one focusing on the academic topic, taught by a faculty member with the second component devoted to new student transition topics, taught by a professional staff partner instructor. This freshman seminar course will explore an intriguing intellectual topic, help freshmen hone critical thinking and writing skills, and assist students in making a successful transition to university life. - - - This course explores the themes of love and sacrifice in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, with a particular focus on their female lead characters. Through a study of works such as Rigoletto, La Traviata, Aida, Manon Lescaut, Tosca, and La Boheme, we will examine how opera elevates storytelling as these women navigate the complexities of love, duty, and societal expectations. Through listening, viewing, and reading we will also explore how contemporary performance practices influence interpretations of these characters and their actions, making these themes as relevant today as they were when the operas were first written. No prior musical experience is required, though an interest in opera and dramatic storytelling will enhance the learning experience. NOTE: All UNIV 101 and UNIV 104 courses are restricted to students in their FIRST SEMESTER at the University. Students MAY NOT register for more than one UNIV 101 or UNIV 104 course.
