LEADERS CHANGING OUR WORLD - - - The UNIV 101 & UNIV 104 courses offer a blended course format which includes two primary components, one focusing on the academic topic, taught by a faculty member with the second component devoted to new student transition topics, taught by a professional staff partner instructor. This freshman seminar course will explore an intriguing intellectual topic, help freshmen hone critical thinking and writing skills, and assist students in making a successful transition to university life. - - - This course will examine public service leaders who have changed our world in the past or in current times. We will explore influential individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. They have all made an important difference through their service but are not necessarily well-known. Examples of leaders we may discuss include Jane Addams, Judith Heumann, Aaron Mair, Richard Oakes, and Chiune Sugihara. The class will be interactive, and students will have several opportunities to participate in small- and large-group discussions in order to encourage them to reflect on the leaders being covered in this course. We also will have several guest facilitators, each of whom will focus on a different leader. Beyond achieving goals related to course content, the instructors also strive to have students recognize their own strengths and begin to see themselves as leaders. NOTE: All UNIV 101 and UNIV 104 courses are restricted to students in their FIRST SEMESTER at the University. Students MAY NOT register for more than one UNIV 101 or UNIV 104 course.
