INNOVATIONS FOR THE MODERN WORLD - - - The UNIV 101 & UNIV 104 courses offer a blended course format which includes two primary components, one focusing on the academic topic, taught by a faculty member with the second component devoted to new student transition topics, taught by a professional staff partner instructor. This freshman seminar course will explore an intriguing intellectual topic, help freshmen hone critical thinking and writing skills, and assist students in making a successful transition to university life. - - - While technology is key to unlocking our understanding of modernity, how we got to where we are is a fascinating tale. The Industrial Revolution and Energy ushered in humanity's first machine age. Progress since then has been primarily driven by technological innovations that have led to the current Fourth Industrial Revolution, or the Computer Age, the world of artificial intelligence and robotics. Starting with an introduction to what has bent the curve of human social development, we discuss six innovations, namely glass, cold, sound, cleanliness, time, light and their history, all of which are at the heart of the computer age which will likewise be discussed. NOTE: All UNIV 101 and UNIV 104 courses are restricted to students in their FIRST SEMESTER at the University. Students MAY NOT register for more than one UNIV 101 or UNIV 104 course.
