VITALS & VOCABULARY: HEALTH LITERACY - - - This introductory course equips first-year students with essential skills to confidently navigate today's complex health information landscape. Students will learn how to identify credible and reliable sources, distinguish scholarly literature from popular media, and effectively use library health databases. The course guides students through developing focused, researchable health questions and translating them into strategic search plans using appropriate keywords and database tools. Emphasis is placed on locating and interpreting peer-reviewed research to support evidence-based conclusions. Students will also explore how artificial intelligence tools generate medical information and learn strategies to critically appraise AI-produced content for accuracy, bias, and reliability. By the end of the course, students will synthesize these skills in a research paper that demonstrates their ability to formulate a health-related question, conduct a structured literature search, evaluate sources, and apply critical thinking to health information. NOTE: All UNIV 101 and UNIV 104 courses are restricted to students in their FIRST SEMESTER at the University. Students MAY NOT register for more than one UNIV 101 or UNIV 104 course.
