The Translation Research and Instruction Program (TRIP) offers annual Translation Workshop courses in Literary and Non-Literary Translation. Both courses are required for the TRIP Minor and the Doctoral Program in Translation Studies, and two semesters of either the Literary or Non-Literary Workshop are required for the Graduate Certificate.
The Translation Workshop provides students with translation practice in a variety of text types. The course engages arguments of the language pair while developing the capacity to translate each text-type. To do so, class meetings consider why a given text should be translated, who the target audience is, where the translation will be published, and what the common issues with translating the source text are. As translators, students will justify their interpretation and choices, and discussions will serve to increase everyone's understanding and experience of the source text. Course objective include analyzing and evaluating one's own and others' translations through the lens of dominant translation theory frameworks, thereby developing one's understanding of translation theory within the context of translation practice.
Prerequisites: Fluency in the source language (usually not English) and effective expression in the target language (usually English).
Student must contact the TRIP Coordinator to enroll in a language-specific session of the Workshop, or if a faculty member has agreed to work with the student independently, to provide documentation from the faculty member showing they have agreed to work with the student.
