Catalog description

This studio course facilitates the development of a theatrical design and production process, either in the semester of design or the semester of production. Students participate in scenic design for a Theatre Department mainstage or studio production and will be assigned to one of the following positions: scenic designer, co-scenic designer, assistant scenic designer, or assistant to the scenic designer. Instruction and practice are given to detailed understanding of design phases and steps in a production process, with a series of progressive deliverables assigned. Projects include: story analysis, visual research, drawing, drafting, rendering, theatrical scale modelmaking, and other fabrication. These assist in communicating or executing complex three-dimensional design ideas. This course will focus on foundational scenic design and related technical skills, design and production communications, as well as collaborative and leadership skills as applied to realized theatre productions. These are widely transferrable to other arts and entertainment-related careers and educational pathways. Prerequisites: THEA 242, 340, 347. No freshman permitted. Offered each semester.
