Dancing Hip Hop Culture: History, Theory, Practice: This hybrid course offers a foundational understanding of hip hop culture through both seminar and embodied practice modes, attending to history, theory, aesthetics, and technique. Emphasizing the integral role of dance in the culture, readings, videos, discussions, and written work addressing sociopolitical, historical, and cultural contexts will be accompanied by our own movement studies. As we study different genres and their local histories, we will also explore resonances across distinct U.S. contexts and African diasporic lineages.
