“This course will prepare students to engage in therapeutic interventions with individuals in a culturally competent manner, considering the bio-psycho-social-cultural-spiritual realities of that individual’s world. The course will be taught from a strengths-based, ecosystems perspective with special attention given to the link between neuroscience and social work practice. It will focus on the following theoretical perspectives and evidence-based practice approaches: psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, trauma-based approaches, narrative/collaborative-dialogic social work practice, and crisis and brief treatment approaches. The course will also present material related to issues that arise within the therapeutic process, including the establishment of a therapeutic relationship/alliance, dealing with resistance, and transference/countertransference, among others. The role of individual treatment in the history of the social work profession will be explored as it relates to current practice. A reflective, critical, and integrative approach to practice will be emphasized throughout the course. Prerequisites: foundation courses. Offered: fall only.
