Using readings, presentations, and discussions, we will examine potential theories of sustainability and analyze their practice across the environmental, economic, and social equity dimensions of contemporary society. While science offers one means of examining sustainability, the complex dimensions that influence social and ecological systems are rife with power, profit, and politics. Interactions of local governments and non-profit organizations contribute to shape impacts and influence actors at different geographic and governmental scales. Our study of sustainability frameworks and practical policy will be evaluated in a local context, although many of these issues relate to national or global factors.
