Storage for Energy Systems

Catalog description
This course introduces various types of energy storage systems and technologies. It starts with defining the importance of and need for energy storage in all energy conversion and transmission scenarios and applications, as well as supply/demand requirements and balancing. The working principles of storage technologies, such as thermal, electrochemical, chemical, and mechanical energy storage, are also presented in detail. This includes the introduction of basic principles of thermodynamics, chemistry, materials science, as well as mechanical and electrical engineering systems. An emphasis is made on matching the storage technologies and systems with energy conversion/transmission applications to maximize the efficiency and economic feasibility of such systems. Small-scale to large-scale storage systems are discussed in detail in terms of structure, operating principles, implementation, and selection. The course will be designed to be self-contained to equip students with all the tools to design or select the energy storage technology for their specific energy requirement. Prerequisites: Graduate standing. Offered every Fall semester or as needed.
