This course is intended for students who grew up speaking Spanish with family or in informal settings and who already feel comfortable communicating in the language. It is designed as the next step after SPAN 212, or for heritage speakers with stronger proficiency due to factors such as bilingual education, Spanish being the dominant language at home, or immersion experiences abroad. Through readings, films, discussions, and written assignments, students explore topics such as identity, migration, gender equity, and Latinx representation in the U.S. and beyond, with particular attention to the Dominican Republic and Latin America more broadly. Students also examine Spain's multicultural heritage, human rights in Latin America, feminism, and future challenges related to environmental issues and the role of music and technology. The course strengthens academic and professional Spanish through vocabulary expansion, argumentative writing, guided analysis, and oral presentations. Students will also connect with peers who share similar cultural backgrounds and life experiences while earning credit toward the Spanish major or minor. This course counts toward the Spanish major or minor. Equivalent of Spanish 215. Offered regularly. 4 credits.
