This course will examine the development of social conditions and problems in the United States. Some of the issues examined include the expansion of homelessness, the limits of reproductive rights, the crisis of missing and murdered of Indigenous people, police brutality, gentrification, the feminization of poverty, and violence against women, among other problems. By examining the overlap between race, class, gender, and sexuality and these social problems, students will be able to understand that much of today's racism, sexism, prejudice against LBTQT populations, and socio-economic exploitation amounts to an increase in the violation of the rights of freedom of movement, decent employment, and social and economic security for the poor and laboring classes, immigrants, and people of color. *If you've previously taken SOC 260, this course will not count for credit.
