Catalog description

This course examines the political, social, economic and ideological impact of the post-WW II U.S. spearheaded international War on Drugs on Chican@, Latin@, and Latin American (and other) peoples in the U.S. and in Latin American countries such as Bolivia, Perú, Colombia, Guatemala, México, Panamá, and Puerto Rico, among others. Furthermore, it analyzes how race, ethnicity/nationality, immigration status, age, class, and gender/sexuality affect the treatment accorded women and men affected by War on Drugs policies and the ways they respond to such policies at the local, national and international levels. Required Videos (e.g., documentaries, films, news programs, late night talk shows, and other visual sources) will complement Required Readings. Students are expected to be in class when required videos are shown. Guest lecturers may be invited to address the class.
