Catalog description

This is the second of two discipline-based courses for the MAT in French or Spanish Adolescence Education students and will focus on foreign language curriculum and teaching. Taken during the student teaching experience, this class will bring the worlds of theory and practice together and help students balance these concerns as educators. Students will be expected to develop as creative, reflective practitioners by alternating between the roles of student and teacher by both doing and thinking/writing/talking about French or Spanish and Foreign Language Teaching. By necessity, this will involve: (a) “questioning the answers” as provided by prior experiences as to how classroom/school French or Spanish should be designed to maximize learning for all students and (b) moving beyond merely “doing things right” by following effective teaching principles and ACTFL National Standards and to “doing the right things” considering validated research and the prior experiences, conceptions & students’ needs. In addition to specific outcomes, course experiences are aimed to create an increased interest in and appreciation for French or Spanish; its applications in & implications for our world; and the mission of schools to promote the development of all students as global citizens.
