Catalog description

This is the first two discipline-based courses for the MAT in French or Spanish Adolescence Education students and explores the philosophical and theoretical foundations of second language (French and Spanish) education. The goal of this course is to investigate how linguistic, cognitive, and sociocultural theories of second language acquisition (SLA) may inform our practice as classroom teachers. Students will consider how both cognitive factors within the learner and social / environmental factors in the classroom shape learning processes and outcomes. Explanations of learning challenges will be discussed within current theories of linguistics and second language acquisition, and specific strategies for addressing them will be proposed within the overall framework of the ACTFL National Standards.
