This is a course designed to introduce students to philosophy and theory of teaching English in the secondary schools. Students will also become acquainted with a variety of teaching/learning strategies, as well as professional standards, journals, and organizations, which support the professional growth of middle and secondary English/Language Arts teachers. Through systematic, scholarly study, students will establish a broad understanding of theories and research related to teaching literature and writing at the secondary level. Throughout the semester, we will focus on perceived and intended end goals of teaching secondary English, while developing our own philosophies and personal beliefs about teaching literature and writing at the secondary level. However, since the class is a prerequisite for SEC 594, we will also look at how these philosophies and theories apply to the reality of today’s classroom. Offered: fall.
