Math Educ in Informal Learning

Catalog description

This course explores the design, facilitation, and study of mathematics education in informal learning spaces through a collaborative, school-based afterschool program for middle and high school students. Students will develop and implement mathematics-rich activities that promote curiosity, exploration, and engagement with STEM ideas that foster deep mathematical engagement beyond the norms and expectations of traditional classroom settings. The course will further examine informal learning environments as powerful contexts for addressing issues of equity, access, inclusion, and privilege in mathematics education. Students will also critically reflect on their evolving role as facilitators rather than traditional instructors of mathematics, and consider how informal spaces can complement classroom learning and expand students’ mathematical identities.
