Digital Publishing explores and investigates the editorial and design process for making digital publications. Students will learn text encoding (markup) processing texts for querying, styling and cataloging while exploring the history of markup in print and digital contexts. In addition to marking up texts students will use html and css to finalize and stylize their digital editions. Throughout the course students will encounter and work with a range of materials exploring the boundaries of texts and expanding their physical and digital possibilities while learning and practicing within a history of textual markup and design. Students will learn coding and design principles in a beginner friendly and project centered course that will give them experience in web development, publishing, editing, and digital collections.RHET 280A Sound and Story in Podcasts - Last year, the term "podcast" turned 20 years old, and in that time span, this digital artform has grown from a homemade craft to a studio-driven business that now reaches an estimated 1/3 of Americans over age 12 each week. This class will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the art of podcasting: its history and connection to earlier sonic and narrative arts such as radio and episodic literature, the various podcast techniques and genres that have emerged (true crime, narrative fiction, history, the interview, the audio essay, and more!) and how podcasters use sound to create emotion, context, and excitement in their work. We will also discuss critical issues, themes and trends in contemporary podcasting, such as why we are all so obsessed with podcasts about obsession. Please note that this is not a production course. Students will listen to, talk about, analyze, and write about podcasts, but we will not be making them in this class. However, current and aspiring podcast makers will leave with an understanding of how-and why-they work, and gain an edge in their work by reflecting more deeply on how sound makes meaning for listeners.
