Introduction to Forensic Psychology Forensic psychology broadly defined involves the application of psychological science and professional psychological expertise to the legal system. A somewhat more narrow definition, and the major focus of this course, involves the application of clinical psychological science and specialized knowledge for the purpose of assisting legal decision makers. This course will focus on the relationship between law and psychology while providing an overview of the many activities and career opportunities available to forensic psychologists. Included among the types of topics to be covered are violence risk assessment, competency to stand trial, stalking, sexual offending, psychopathy, criminal responsibility (insanity), civil commitment, juvenile delinquency, child custody and family violence. The actual topic coverage will to some extent depend upon student interests and time limitations. Students will learn about the similarities and differences between clinical and forensic psychology. They will also be exposed to important legal standards which impact and inform the work psychologists perform within the forensic area. The course will include a review of relevant empirical literature with a focus on how scientific findings are utilized in the work carried out by forensic psychologists. Multicultural and diversity factors will be considered across topics addressed in this course. One paper, an "Amicus Curiae Brief", will also be required. Class format will combine lectures, demonstrations, and discussions. Students must earn a grade of C- or higher for this course to apply to the major. Prerequisites: PSYC 111 with a grade of C or higher, PSYC 243 with a grade of C or higher, and PSYC 344 with a grade of C- or higher. Course restricted to junior/senior psychology or integrative neuroscience majors. This course will NOT fulfill the seminar requirement for Integrative Neuroscience.
