Introduction to the neural substrates underlying brain/behavior relationships. Fundamental knowledge of neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuropharmacology, neuroanatomy and behavioral neuroscience techniques. Topics include basic cellular mechanisms involved in nervous system organization, electrical and biochemical neurotransmission, functional organization of neuroendocrine and sensory motor systems (visual, auditory, gustatory, somatosensory and olfactory mediation of behavior.) Species-typical behavior in the context of CNS regulation of sleep, biological rhythms, sexual development and reproduction, ingestive behaviors, emotion and motivation, and mental disorders. Students must earn a grade of C- or higher for this course to apply to the major. Prerequisites: PSYC 111 with a grade of C or higher Prerequisite or co-requisite: PSYC 243 with a grade of C or higher; alternatively, junior standing in biology or chemistry and consent of instructor.
