Introduces graduate students to the comparative study of political institutions as it has developed in the modern (post WWII) era of political science. The goals of the course are two: first, to examine the relationship between political theorizing and empirical investigation, with emphasis on the importance of ensuring compatibility between the substantive question, theory, and method; second, to provide students with a broad introduction to important works and approaches in comparative politics. A single seminar cannot adequately cover the entire discipline, so in the effort to provide the broadest and most useful foundation possible, we will focus on questions and concerns that have been the subject for application of a wide range of methodological approaches.
