PHRM 580E: Drug Discovery This elective course will provide an in-depth overview of the drug-discovery process, particularly from the perspective of the modern pharmaceutical and biotech industry. Students will gain insight into the: (1) the selection of drug targets; (2) identification of lead molecules; (3) role of animal models of human diseases; (4) optimization of potency and pharmacokinetics; (5) assessment of drug safety and drug-drug interactions; (6) financial risks and rewards associated with drug development; (7) drug approval process; and (8) regulatory and intellectual property issues. A major emphasis of the class will be on case studies that illustrate these principles. Case studies will emphasize drugs that the students are familiar with from their IPT classes. (
