PHRM 580B: Complementary and Alternative Medicine This elective course explores the role of selected complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies used world-wide for the attainment of health. The World Health Organization definition of health will be emphasized. CAM and allopathic medicine will be compared and their combined use will be discussed with the introduction of the Integrative Medicine approach to patient-centered care. The scientific evidence regarding effectiveness and safety will be discussed with each of the CAM therapies presented. With the discussion of cultural health belief practices, students will be introduced to the idea that our personal health beliefs interplay with our cultural and traditional life experiences to inform our preventative and curative health behaviors.
