Catalog description
PHRM 575: Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience IV: General/Internal Medicine This Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) builds on the knowledge and skills students have acquired during their P1 - P3 years through direct patient care experiences in an inpatient general medicine/internal medicine acute care setting. Key goals of all APPEs are to continue development of students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills through hands-on experiences. During this experience, students will actively take part in many pharmacy practice activities/experiences occurring within a general medicine/internal medicine acute care setting. Examples of these activities/experiences include: optimizing drug therapy management and medication safety in acute care; drug therapy monitoring to establish efficacy and prevent adverse events in high acuity and potentially quickly-changing medical situations; and participating as a member of the interprofessional healthcare team. Goals of this APPE are to provide students with opportunities to: (1) develop knowledge and clinical skills in the provision of patient-centered care within an acute care pharmacy practice setting with rapidly changing clinical requirements; (2) build clinical decision-making skills and confidence in these skills; and (3) provide safe, individualized and accountable patient care from hospital admission through discharge as part of an interprofessional healthcare team in an acute medical care setting.
