PHRM 551: Public Health and Global Health Problems This course familiarizes students with public health concepts and practice at community, national and global levels with emphasis on global health problems as well as the expanding roles for pharmacists in public health. In particular, the roles for pharmacists in disaster preparedness and ensuring medication safety will be discussed. The course will include key historical learnings from public health, an exploration of the social determinants of health and the principles used in evidence-based public health practice. Understanding the evaluation of public health interventions will be a central course theme in combination with student investigation of major global public health issues in infectious and chronic disease. As well, students will explore key public health issues in the local and adjacent rural communities surrounding Binghamton, NY. Student exploration of public health problems will include student participation in case-based active learning exercises. (
