Catalog description

PHRM 548: Pharmacoepidemiology, Pharmacoeconomics and Health Outcomes This course is designed to familiarize students with the principles of pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics. Focus is on major areas of the evolving fields of pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics with an emphasis on measuring health outcomes. Course material builds on and extends the skills and concepts learned in previous courses within the curriculum (PHRM 528, PHRM 529) that are focused on the effectiveness of medication use at a population level. The additional dimensions of efficiency or cost relative to the benefit of a given health outcome and patient quality of life are introduced and developed. Use of pharmacoepidemiologic studies in post-marketing safety studies and communication of risk is covered. Additionally, the role of both pharmacoepidemiologic and pharmacoeconomic studies in the formulary process used for medication coverage by insurers and hospitals is explored. (
