PHRM 543: Integrated Pharmacotherapy IX: Special Populations - Geriatrics, Pediatrics and Health of Rural Populations This is the ninth in a sequence of nine Integrated Pharmacotherapy modules with a focus on diseases and disorders affecting geriatric, pediatric and rural populations. Basic biochemical, anatomical and physiological, pharmacological, medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetic, clinical chemistry and pharmacotherapeutic principles are integrated and applied to presentation and management of disease and disorders common to these populations such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, delirium, critical care, end of life/palliative care, malnutrition, and dehydration. Additionally, differences in the presentation and treatment of different diseases (covered in previous Integrated Pharmacotherapy Courses) as well as adverse reactions to medications in these populations will be addressed. Biological and physicochemical principles related to drug delivery and dosage forms used in the treatment of these disorders are covered as well as preparation methods routes of administration. Examples and active case-based learning are used to assist students’ building skills to solve problems associated with the treatment and management of conditions and diseases in these populations. (
