PHRM 510: Health Care Delivery This is an interprofessional course with students in various health and behavioral health care professions. Foundational knowledge necessary to understand the organization of the health care system and health care delivery in the United States is provided in this course. Representative international health care systems are compared to the United States health care system. Factors important to contemporary pharmacy practice are explored including social, legal/regulatory, economic, public health, professional and patient care implications of pharmacy practice. Health care is defined and United States health care financing and economics are introduced. Key legislation such as the Affordable Care Act and models of care delivery such as the Patient-Centered Medical Home are presented. The implications for both health care delivery and the pharmacy profession with these emerging initiatives are explored. Improving patient clinical outcomes and quality of life through the safe and efficient use of health care and pharmaceutical resources in a resource-limited financial environment is a major theme. Related to this, the United States drug approval process and the pharmaceutical industry are described. Contemporary roles available to pharmacists in the United States are described and the role of the pharmacist as a member of an interprofessional team of health and behavioral health care professionals is introduced.
