PHRM 504: Integrated Pharmacotherapy I: Self Care and Over the Counter Products This is the first in a sequence of nine Integrated Pharmacotherapy modules with a focus on health conditions that are frequently treated using over the counter (OTC) products including herbal and dietary supplements and through patient self-care. Basic biochemical, anatomical and physiological, pharmacological, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacotherapeutic principles are integrated and applied to management of common health conditions treated using OTC products. As well, dosage forms, physical delivery and preparation and administration of these products are discussed. The Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process will be introduced and this format will be employed to present the content of this course. Areas and conditions covered in this course are designed to prepare students for their Community Pharmacy Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (PHRM 562) and include herbal/dietary supplements, pain medications, common cold/flu treatment, dermatology, commonly encountered gastrointestinal problems, ophthalmic, otic and oral care, smoking cessation, obesity, sleep disorders, and reproductive and genital disorders. Examples and active case-based learning are used to assist students building skills to solve problems associated with the use of OTC products and self-care treatment.(
