This is the first of three pharmacy bridging courses that reviews basic scientific principles while exploring the application of these principles to therapeutic decision-making. It provides foundational knowledge for subsequent Integrated Pharmacotherapy courses. Pharmacology will study the basic properties of chemicals and chemical agents and their interactions when introduced into the body while pharmacokinetics will explain how medications are acted upon by the body and ultimately metabolized and/or eliminated including the equations used to calculate the kinetics of these chemicals in the living organism. Medicinal chemistry addresses structure-activity relationships that confer pharmacologic activity and molecular mechanisms of action and therapeutic properties. An introduction to genetics in the context of human physiology and pathophysiology and the molecular basis of disease will also be discussed. (
