Intro Pharmaceutical Sciences

Catalog description

PHRM 201: This course is designed to give students an appreciation of the science behind pharmaceutical agents - both how they work and how they are discovered. Students will be introduced to broad concepts of pharmacology including drug targets and binding modes, assessment of affinity and potency, medicinal chemistry, and ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion). Once students have a basic understanding of pharmacology, we will next explore how new drugs are discovered - introducing the regulatory bodies and legal framework necessary (including intellectual property) needed for pharmaceutical innovation. There will be a focus on the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, highlighting the important role of the scientific process at every stage of drug development. (
