Proseminar: Hist Methodologies

Catalog description

This course aims to develop analytic and interpretive skills by working with texts from the history of philosophy. Through weekly writing assignments and a series of oral presentations, students will practice reconstructing positions, taking up interpretive controversies, and relating hermeneutic questions to normative argumentation. The course does not culminate in a research paper, but in a written analysis of explanatory and pedagogical approaches to a particular text, and an oral defense of the analysis. The philosophical content will vary from year to year, but will be thematically organized with selections taken from the history of moral and political philosophy. Prerequisite: Two courses in Philosophy.
