This introductory, lecture-based course examines philosophical arguments and theories that can help us think about controversial issues in law, politics and public policy. Readings include classic and contemporary philosophical texts as well as policy papers and Supreme Court opinions. Students will reflect on moral and political issues, read and interpret philosophical and legal texts, identify and evaluate arguments, and write essays responding to interpretive and evaluative questions. Regular attendance at lectures and weekly discussion sections is a requirement along with in-class examinations and writing assignments. The course has no prerequisites and is appropriate for first year students.
