Catalog description

This course is designed to introduce students to the discourse and practice of philosophy through some prominent texts selected from Continental European thought, with special attention given to existentialism and phenomenology. Topics studied may include the character of subjective experience, the authority of values, the contingency of the self, history and self-knowledge, and the limits of thought. The authors who may be represented include Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and de Beauvoir. This course fulfills the philosophy major requirement for an introductory course. No prior coursework is required.
