At its core, philosophy is all about thinking carefully. It invites us to consider the reasoning behind our beliefs, and question whether or not that reasoning is good reasoning. This "philosophical method" can be applied to almost anything, so the content of philosophy is enormously broad. In this class, we'll survey some of the most challenging questions in philosophy, including (but not limited to): Who are you? What can you know? Does God exist? Should you fear death? Why be good? Is time travel possible? Are we free? Along the way, you'll be introduced to philosophical tools that will help you hone your critical thinking skills, and - hopefully - engage more meaningfully with the world around you.
