Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a powerful tool for managing and analyzing spatial data relevant to anthropology, urban studies, biology, archaeology, geology, geography, planning, etc. This course introduces students to the background and techniques of GIS. Through hands-on exercises, students will learn how to find, manage, analyze spatial data, and create compelling maps for more transparent communication of spatial findings. The course reviews the basics of spatial data mapping as well as more advanced topics such as spatial statistics. By the end of this course, students will be familiar with GIS software and know how to appropriately apply it to address spatial questions in research and analyses.
