Catalog description

This course will ask students to reimagine the concept and practice of justice based on community-driven visions and practices of atrocity prevention. We will ask: How do survivors of atrocity understand and practice justice? What are the mechanisms that support survivors’ agency in creating their own justice practices in and outside of established processes and institutions? How can justice be a tool for healing and atrocity prevention? This course will examine the way in which individuals and groups engage in community-driven justice practices, and the healing potential that can emerge from organizing and creating their own visions of justice. Varying justice models such as restorative justice, memory practices, and indigenous conceptions of justice will be analyzed to identify frameworks and processes of prevention that center survivors’ experiences and agency.
