Catalog description

This course provides a critical exploration of global development as both an academic field and a set of practices shaping the contemporary world. The course surveys the major theoretical frameworks-modernization, dependency, world-systems, postcolonial, feminist, and sustainable development-while also engaging with pressing issues such as inequality, poverty, governance, migration, climate change, and technological change. Students will examine how international organizations, states, markets, and civil society interact in defining development agendas and outcomes. The course will emphasize critical analysis of the assumptions, power relations, and ethical dilemmas underlying development theory and practice.
