Foundations of Civic Engagemnt

One of the primary goals of higher education is to prepare students for a lifetime of engagement in civic life. But, what does that mean and why is it important? This course addresses that question through an exploration of core concepts of civic engagement, such as democratic participation, community organizing and civil society. The course will introduce students to the role formal and informal institutions (such as nonprofit organizations, local government, student associations and grass roots advocacy groups) play in civic engagement, and will emphasize ways in which students may pursue public service careers and volunteer opportunities. The course will draw on the expertise of faculty from across the College of Community and Public Affairs (in Public Administration, Social Work, Student Affairs Administration and Human Development) to provide students with a wide-ranging introduction to civic engagement. This course is appropriate for first-year students who are living in Hinman; others may enroll only with permission of the instructor.
