Independent study is a mechanism by which students can study a definitive area in depth under the direction of faculty members. Students engaged in independent study are responsible for their own learning within the guidelines of the learning contract established with the supervising faculty member. Independent study can be counted as elective credit and may--with the approval of the Director of the Graduate Program--be used in place of a regular course. Note that extenuating circumstances must be validated by the Director to accommodate a request for the use of an Independent Study in place of a normal course offering. Grading procedures for independent study are determined by the student and the faculty member and may be either normally graded or pass/fail. Variable credit. See full Independent Study Guidelines in the DSON Graduate Student Handbook.
